INTESOL PERU offers a fully accredited 150+ hour TESOL/TEFFL course with extremely high academic content and a very challenging practical teaching component. This is a 4-week onsite course leading to the internationally recognized Certificate of Educational Studies in TESOL accredited by The College of Teachers and the INTESOL Certificate in the Methodology and Teaching of English as a Foreign Language (TEFL).

The overall aim of the course is to provide you with a professional graduate-level TESOL/TEFL course, including a balance between the theory and methodology of ESL and to thoroughly prepare you for teaching English internationally.

APPLICATION

This is an initial ESL teaching qualification in TESOL/TEFL, and you DO NOT need to have prior teaching experience or teaching qualifications to be accepted onto the TESOL/TEFL course. Applicants should be at least 18 years of age and have a university degree. Note that exceptions can be made for applicants who demonstrate their suitability for the course through the questions in the online application form. Applicants who are not native English speakers must also provide evidence of their proficiency level in English. After you complete and send the online application, we will thoroughly review your answers. Successful applicants will be notified by email within 2-4 days following their application.

WEEKLY SCHEDULE

Your schedule will normally consist of lectures and group work in the morning and early afternoon followed by observations of experienced teachers (weeks 1 and 2) and teaching practice (weeks 3 and 4). After teaching practice, you will have feedback sessions with your teacher-trainer. The most important point here is to accept constructive criticism on how you can make your teaching more effective. What matters, even more than a good performance, is for you to be able to reflect on your teaching experience and learn from it.

A weekly schedule generally looks like this:

Monday – Friday (Weeks 1 and 2)

7:00 – 9:00       Observation and critique of experienced teachers (trainees’ option)
9:00 – 12:00     Lecture and group work sessions
12:00 – 13:00   Lunch
13:00 – 15:00   Lecture and group work sessions
15:00 –             Observation and critique of experienced teachers (trainees’ option)

TESOL/TEFL trainees choose if they observe classes in the early morning or afternoon

Monday – Friday (Weeks 3 and 4)

7:00 – 9:00       Practical teaching with evaluation and feedback (trainees’ option)
9:00 – 12:00     Lecture and group work sessions
12:00 – 13:00   Lunch

PRACTICAL TEACHING

You will complete a minimum of 10 hours of teaching practice with real students in live classes. Your classes will be observed by your teacher-trainer. This will be followed by feedback and evaluation. You will be graded on different aspects of your teaching performance, and receive an overall grade for the lesson. This practical side of the course will enable you to learn from first-hand experience and will also equip you with the techniques needed to become an effective ESL teacher.

CLASS OBSERVATIONS

Apart from learning from your own and your peers’ teaching practice, as part of the TESOL/TEFL training you will complete a minimum of 10 hours of observation of experienced teachers.

UNKNOWN FOREIGN LANGUAGE COURSE

As part of the TESOL/TEFL training you will have a mini foreign language course in Quechua (the ancient Inca language). This will give you the opportunity to see things from an ESL learner’s perspective. The unknown language lessons are intended to help sensitize you to learner needs, and most trainees find this to be one of the most interesting parts of the course.

ASSESSMENT AND GRADING

The theoretical components of the TESOL/TEFL course are continually assessed - there are no written examinations. You will be given a number of assignments throughout the course, which are submitted for assessment by your teacher-trainer. The course sessions are always conducted in small groups with on-going support and instruction, and trainees are expected to actively contribute in class.

At INTESOL PERU we pride ourselves on personalized support. Your teacher-trainer and our executive team are available to offer individual support and coaching.

Upon completion of the course, trainees are awarded the College of Teachers and the INTESOL certificates with one of the following grades:

   A1 - Distinction
   A2 - Excellent
   B1 - Very good
   B2 - Good
   C - Pass

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

In order to earn your College of Teachers and INTESOL certificates in TESOL/TEFL, candidates must pass both the theoretical and practical components of the TESOL/TEFL course. Your overall grade will be an average of your theoretical and practical grades. Note that attendance is required during the course; trainees must attend all scheduled sessions and teaching practice, though exceptions can be made in case of illness.

QUALIFICATIONS OBTAINED

Successful candidates will receive the College of Teachers Certificate of Educational Studies in TESOL and the INTESOL Certificate in the Methodology and Teaching of English as a Foreign Language. You will also receive a personalized reference letter where details of both course structure and your performance in the practical teaching module will be noted. Note that the College of Teachers Certificate normally takes a few weeks to be sent to your address.
